  • Dashashwamedh Ghat Overview

Dashashwamedh’ word is combination of three Sanskrit words- Dash (ten), Ashwa (horse), Medha (sacrifice). There is a mythological story behind the name of this Ghat. Kashi was ruled by a king named Devodasa, he told Lord Brahma to keep all the gods away from Kashi till he rules. Lord Shiva was living in Madrachal and was very eager to live in Kashi. Lord Brahma went to the king in disguise of a Brahmin and begged permission for Ashwamedh Yagnas and succeeded to get ten horses. Lord Brahma organized the yagnas and fixed a place for Lord Shiva in Varanasi. So the name of the Ghat became Dashashwamedh. Tourists must visit this Ghat in evening to witness the divine Ganga Arti of this Ghat. In spite of the persistent boat sailors, flower sellers, massage practitioners, and touts trying to drag off to a Silk Saree shop, it’s a wonderful place to linger and people watch while soaking up the atmosphere. Every evening at 7:00 pm an elaborate and popular Ganga Arti ceremony with worship, fire and dance is staged here. Tourists can enjoy the Arti from Ghat or from the boats inside the river.
