  • Manikarnika Ghat Overview

Skanda Puran, one of the eighteen Purans in Hindu Mythology praises the Sangam of three elements Ganga, Varanasi and Vishweshwar, the secret of Salvation. Like any other component present in the city of light, the ghats too are very religious and considered a platform for liberation and the end of human misery. There are eighty four ghats in all. If the blessings of life start at Dashashwamedh Ghat then it ends at Manikarnika Ghat, a unique combination of life and death in the desire of Salvation attracts the pilgrims. Paradoxically Varanasi is only city on earth that is famous for the death and Salvation and Manikarnika Ghat is considered to be the greatest cremation place in India and perhaps in the world. The name of the Ghat as Manikarnika is given by Lord Shiva Himself. A story is being told by local and priests that once during bath in Vishnu Kund the gem of earring of goddess Parvati fell in the water and Lord Shiva tried to retain it for goddess Parvati gave the name Manikarnika. Another story is associated with Sati, Lord Shiva while carrying the burning body of Sati towards Himalaya, the earrings of Sati fell down here, the name Manikarnika derived from it. Tourists have many things here to hear but also many things to see such as Manikarnika Kund, Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple, Tarkeshwar Temple, Baba Mashan Nath Temple, Vishnu Paduka Temple and Kashi Karwat Temple.
